8th April 2011

Local planning applications                                                               8th April 2011

As a new service to Clarion readers we are supplying details of local planning applications together with a link to West Lindsey District Council where you should be able to see all the associated papers – plans and photographs and all the thinking behind the application.  The lucky first application to be circulated is for a change of use of a single storey barn at 2 Back Lane, Scothern.    If you have not used the West Lindsey link before this is a particularly good one to try out because it has some good photographs and everything is very clear – to see all click on this link and then click on whichever document interests you.

We hope you like this new service.  If we want our village to continue to be a lovely place to live in it is important to have an increasingly informed local population, and good applications for planning consent should have nothing to fear from this increased participation.  Please let us know if you agree – or disagree.  This goes for anything you see in the Clarion.

Talented and outstanding people

What a hare we set running when we said Scothern had quite a few exceptional and talented people.   Did you know that three of our residents are athletes who are competing at the highest level of their sport?  Let’s not beat about the bush, we are talking about footballers who are competing against teams from Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton et al.   You didn’t know?   How could you not know that Stacey Aisthorpe, Megan Harris and Martha Harris are playing for Lincoln Ladies – which is one of only eight teams selected for the new FA Women’s Super League, and they are playing alongside four England players.   And that is not the only Scothern connection – local men Rod Wilson and Glen Harris are manager and coach respectively.

The first match is at Sincil Bank on the evening of Wednesday 13th.  If you want to know more go to Women’s Super League – and why not go and support the girls at Sincil Bank?   After all there are not many chances for us to see the best athletes in their class performing locally.

Emails from our readers

Dear Clarion - Talking of talented and outstanding people, Ellison Boulters are to be heartily congratulated on their year 3/4 production "Fiends Reunited" last night.  A very polished and professional performance from 7 and 8 year olds acting and singing in an array of amazing costumes. (including a couple in drag!)   A great night out was had by all who attended.  Kate

Yo Clarion – I was out and about in Scothern all morning on 1st April and didn’t see any naked women.  Are you sure you got your facts right?    Bruce    (What can we say, Bruce.  Just look harder next 1st April.  Ed)

Elections and referendum on 5th May

The elections are nearly upon us, and unusually this time there will be a national referendum as well.  It’s on AV voting – “Yes” or “No”.   Because we have so many talented and outstanding people in Scothern (oh yes we do!) you will all probably know how this works, but in case you don’t let the Clarion explain.   AV refers to alternative voting for our MPs and if, say, there are four candidates you can vote for them in order of merit.  Although you don’t have to, you can vote for only one if you want.  Then if ……….. it’s no good it seems the staff of the Clarion are insufficiently talented and exceptional to explain this. If like us you need some help go to  How the referendum for AV works  (hope this link works for you – it is a bit hit and miss).

What you won’t be able to do on the 5th May is vote for a local parish councillor.  Only four local people put their names forward for this ordeal and we should have seven.  Our earnest hope is that now you are reading local news in the Clarion one or two of you might be stimulated to come forward and have a go.  Is it worth having councillors? Who knows?  But for example we used to have some really lovely old fingerposts signing our roads in Scothern – and now we don’t.  And quite a few people were sorry when we lost our old style telephone box, which seemed to suit the character of the village.   And do you remember the lovely little bridge which crossed the railway at Stainton?  Gone.  So……

Footpath change   You never know when local councillors are going to make a decision which might be important to you, your family or friends.   Take last Wednesday’s meeting for instance.  There was an item on the proposed change of a footpath through and to the rear of the Alders.  Due to some sort of mix up when the Alders was built no-one ever applied to change the footpath which goes through it, and according to the County Council’s map the footpath goes through several of the houses and gardens there (see details here) .   Obviously it would be a good idea to clear up this mistake.  However, at the meeting members of the public were concerned that another tweak of the path sent it around a paddock owned by local businessman Mark Harris, who also owns Mark Harris Commercials next door.  The concern expressed was that this might be part of a creeping commercialisation of this land.  And in fact it is Mr Harris who has made the application to change the path, not the residents of the Alders who are arguably the ones most affected.

What would you decide to do?  Does it matter anyway?  Maybe it’s not creeping development.  And if it is, so what?  Surely we want to support local businesses in Scothern?  Or maybe you would prefer less light industry next to houses?  Somebody has to represent these competing interests and it would be better if it was somebody who knew what they were doing and was prepared to think impartially and objectively.   If you think you are up to it why not put your name forward, or at least make an enquiry -   scothernpc@yahoo.co.uk .     Go on, you know you want to.

If you would like to follow the fortunes of handsome local adventurer Graham Duff just click Duffy’s blog and you will see he’s already been above the snow line on Everest.      How he has the energy to write a daily blog the Clarion does not know – it’s hard enough writing this stuff from the comfort of the Clarion editor’s office.  His blog is a great read and gives a fascinating and personal insight on what it takes to get to the top of the world’s highest mountain – quite a bit of vomiting, weeing and naked washing by the sound of it.

And finally - That defibrillator we mentioned, we will be telling you more about it soon - promise.  Just don’t have the heart attack yet.
