Muck spreading                                                                                 1st April 2011

Yes folks, the big topic for the past week or so seems to have been muck spreading – certainly if you live in the east end of the village.   We live in a rural village so we should expect the smell of the land to be a bit riper at certain seasons but farmers are expected to be good neighbours as well, and when their fields are adjacent to houses (as they are all around Scothern) then they have a code of conduct to abide by.

As a result of some complaints from residents the environmental protection officer from West Lindsey District Council did visit the village, but it was almost two weeks after the smells first presented themselves so there was not much for her to find.  She did speak to the local farmer responsible, and has sent him a letter outlining his responsibilities.

If we get any repetition it is up to residents to decide whether the smell is acceptable.  If it’s not too bad then you can just have a moan about it in the pub.  If you think it goes beyond what you should accept then it is very important that you ring the environmental protection officer at an early stage – she is Sarah Gamble telephone 01427 676676 extension 382.  Make sure they log your call.

Talented and outstanding people

In the last edition of the Clarion we said there are quite a few talented and outstanding people in Scothern and at least one person raised an eyebrow at this –after all they said we are only a small village, how many talented people can have.   So here is news of another of our residents in that category – Peter Montgomery.  As many of you know Peter is an artist who painted the picture behind the alter at St Germain’s Church which was there for quite some time whilst the original painting was being renovated, and you can also see some of his work on the walls of the Bottle and Glass.    His style is quite eclectic – you will not always see exactly what you might expect from a local artist and if you are interested in art you should definitely take a look at his work.

Peter’s studio at his home at Beech Cottage, 4 Church Road, Scothern, will be open for visitors on certain days between Saturday 7th and Sunday 15th May and you can find details of this (along with comprehensive information about access to other Lincolnshire artists) by clicking this link to Art on the Map . There is also an excellent booklet available which you can get from all sorts of places, including by ringing Peter on 861556.

Your favourite pothole

In the last Clarion we mentioned the criteria which Lincolnshire County Council use for urgent mending of potholes (roughly 1 ½ inches deep and 19 inches wide) and invited Clarion readers to send us any details of potholes they thought qualified.  Nobody sent anything in, so probably things are not as bad as we thought – although one couple did make a note of several and sent the details direct to Lincolnshire County Council.  Well done you two – the Clarion knows at least one of them has been fixed.

Clarion readers

You might be wondering how many Clarion readers there actually are?  Well the Scothern Clarion now goes to over eighty households, which we think is getting on for a quarter of Scothern.

Men of Scothern

Gentlemen - did you see the Lady Godiva pageant as it went through Scothern this morning?   We are so sorry the Clarion didn’t publish news of it last week as we understand it was well worth seeing – even though it was very risqué.    If you missed it our apologies – but if you get up early to see a very naked lady on the streets of Scothern on the same date next year then you might well find yourself blushing.

Scothern Players and the Farndale Ladies

Did you see the Farndale Ladies Townswomen’s Guild aka Scothern Players’ performance last weekend?  If you didn’t what a treat you missed – it was worth going just for the set and the special effects.  Lisa Langston directed a cast who were totally on song with particularly memorable moments being -

Jan Clode saying – “Here is Edgar… my husband….coming in now….and we shall see him… soon…  Come in when you’re ready, Edgar” (if this doesn’t make you smile you weren’t there).

Liz Peplow as Pawn the butler playing with the silver tray and flashing at the audience.

Ruth Noon with her head between Jim Adams’ legs - priceless!

Scothern Parish Council Agenda

The next meeting of Scothern Parish Council is on Wednesday 6th April and takes place in the studio at the back of Ellison Boulters school – to get to it you have to walk to the doors in the southern corner of the building.  The agenda is not very exciting but if you would like to see it then click this link to go to the village web site .  If you want it to be more exciting or relevant then you could always email us with your views - scothernpc@yahoo.co.uk
