Crime in Scothern 26th April 2011
On the night of 17th April two teenagers were disturbed attempting to steal a Skoda Felicia from Main Street. Apparently the boys, who are described as local but not from Scothern, have been given a warning. Just shows that even in Scothern it is worth locking things up at night.
Litter picking
What a super turnout for the litter picking. Sixteen people gave up precious time on a Sunday afternoon to do a bit of community service – and they hadn’t even been caught trying to steal cars! Some even said it was fun. The Clarion salutes you all – many thanks.
Summer certainly is a’cumin
Have you seen the newly refurbished covers, sightscreens and benches on the recreation ground? If the cricket is as good as all the preparation the team has been doing we should be in for a really good season.
Annual Parish Meeting
The annual Parish Meeting takes place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday 11th May in the studio at the rear of Ellison Boulters School. The meeting is separate from the Parish Council Meeting – rather it is a meeting of residents to talk about anything they want to. There may be representatives of village organisations there letting us know what their groups have to offer but the main objective is to give you, the people who make up our village, a forum to say whatever you think so that your views are represented. It is up to you what is discussed – possibly Grange Park, the playing field, allotments, a plan for the village, conservation, modernisation, a shop, the school, broadband speeds? If you don’t come then the opportunity is missed. In recent years almost no-one has attended – why not be one of the people who begin to change this.
Next Parish Council Meeting
There will be a short parish council meeting on the same evening as the Annual Parish Meeting. Key business that night will be the election of a new Chairman and hopefully the co-option of at least one new parish councillor.
Election reminder
Don’t forget to vote in the District Council elections on 5th May. There are only two candidates – our present Councillor Stuart Curtis of Sudbrooke and potential Councillor Melanie Tointon of Scothern. Even if you are not interested in local elections there is still a good reason for turning out – the referendum on alternative voting which is taking place at the same time. We hardly ever get referenda in this country (Clement Atlee apparently thought they were “just not British”) so this is an opportunity which does not come around very often.
Anthony Nolan Register
You may already have read in the village magazine how Julie and Alfie Cook have had the terrible experience of having their lovely grand-daugher, Annabel aged 4 being recently diagnosed with leukaemia. When these awful things happen so close to home it gives many of us a feeling of thanks that it wasn’t our own family, but also the need to do something to help. Well in this case there is something we can do – we can check out the Anthony Nolan website and consider registering as a donor or making a cash donation. If you want to contact Julie or Alfie in order to provide more local or personal support you can get in touch on ******* or telephone ******.
Yet More Royal Wedding News
Not only is at least one Scothern person going to “The Wedding” on Friday but another has recently been discussing it on telly and written a book about the subject. Former Craypool Lane resident Tracy Borman certainly comes into our talented and exceptional Scothern people category. Tracy is an eminent historian and author with several books to her credit. Along with three other female historians (aka “The History Girls”) she has written The Ring and the Crown: A History of Royal Weddings 1066-2011 and has been interviewed during this week’s BBC television programme “Britain’s Royal Weddings”, which you can still catch on BBC IPlayer if you are quick.
You had what? “I had my first pee bottle experience, it was so cold I opted to stay in the tent, rather than freeze on the way to the toilet. The crescendo noise the bottle makes as it gets near the top is most unnerving!” If you want to read more of this gripping stuff from Scothern’s intrepid Everest expeditioner go to Duffy’s blog
First responders
OK, you can have that heart attack you have been promising yourself. LIVES first responders are now operating in Scothern, Sudbrooke and Langworth and we have a local defibrillator standing by ready for action. Main Street resident Graham Kirkman is one of the six local First Responders trained in the use of the equipment and he is ready not only to come out and save lives but also to give talks and information to local groups who might be interested.
The organisation is fully integrated into the 999 system – if you call ambulance emergency and they assess that you are suitable for first response they contact Graham and his colleagues automatically – sometimes before you are off the telephone.
If your group would like to hear a presentation from Graham, or you would like to volunteer to become a first responder yourself, please ring local organiser Mike Johnson at Sudbrooke tel 01522 750878.
And finally – if you want to see the editor of the Clarion on video you can try and spot him in the trailer of the lovely film “Life in a Day” which is going to be released in July by clicking here. Just don’t blink!
