Annual Parish Meeting                                                                                  9th May 2011

Please keep reading even though this edition of The Scothern Clarion is mainly about the annual parish meeting which is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday 11th May (day after tomorrow) and we are going to try and persuade you to come along.

The annual parish meeting is NOT a parish council meeting.  Rather it is a historical relic which all parishes are obliged to have once a year between March and the 31st May.     It is the meeting where residents can sit down together and talk about the village and how things are going, and what direction the village ought to be going in.

In recent years it has been attended by an average of five and a half residents.

This year we are really asking for more people to attend in the hope that we can get a real steer about what people want for the village.   The only real “official” at the meeting will be the parish council chairman who has a duty to take the chair.   What is discussed at the meeting is up to those attending – but for sure someone is going to ask

“Do we really want an allotment or two in the village? “ and

“Are we using Grange Park to its full advantage and do we spend too much/not enough money on it?” and

“We understand there is a broadband cable going through the village – how much effort would you like the community to put in to see if we could tap into it and get high speed broadband and cable TV/telephones?”

If any of the above is of interest to any of you – or if you have any other thoughts on village life – or if you are interested in what other people are saying about the village – then please come along.

If hardly anybody comes then at least it will be easy, nothing will need doing and we will be able to sit around and have a cup of tea and a chat.

On the other hand if you Clarion readers turn out in force it will almost certainly be chaos (because no-one thinks you will come and they are not really ready for you) but it might be exciting or at least interesting.  And at the end of the evening we will then begin know what the opinion formers in the village want for our community.

Please come along and prove that we are indeed engendering a renewed spirit of endeavour and community in our great village.

Planning

There is quite an interesting planning application this week.   It is from Mrs Alison Wright of Heath Farm Nursery and it is about a significant extension of the nursery to provide, amongst other things, 24 hour nursery care.     The business case which Mrs Wright outlines is well worth a read in its own right.  You can find the application by clicking here , or here for the interesting support information.

Dog fouling on the recreation ground

The good news is that our efforts to reduce dog fouling on the playing field seem to be bearing some fruit (if that is the right analogy).    The cricketers report a marked reduction in dog faeces – so well done everyone.  On the downside they did see one resident who simply did not pick up after his dog had done its business – so that resident has been reported to West Lindsey District Council who are investigating this as anti-social behaviour.

Art on the map

It’s not too late to visit a few local artists – including our own Peter Montgomery – who are taking part in Lincolnshire’s excellent Art on the Map project this week.    There are other artists very close by, including at Welton and Spridlington, who would love to see you at their studios.   Why not have an artistic jaunt this weekend?   It is free of charge, fun, and might even inspire you to do a bit of art yourself – several of the artists encourage other local amateurs and organise painting classes, for example Denise Hawthorne at Welton has a regular group.

Vicarage Lane Street Party

How nice to see Vicarage Lane residents enjoying Grange Park in the sunshine by holding their Royal Wedding Street Party there.   What a friendly crowd they are – the Clarion roving reporter was even offered a glass of red!   What more could be asked on such a lovely day.

Everest

The Clarion makes no apology for encouraging you once more to check out Duffy’s blog.  Graham is now as acclimatised as he is going to be and today has set off on the final journey upwards.  It will take several days – but this is it, the only way is up and into what journalists like to call “the death zone”.  He has been busy writing his blog through staggering discomfort and many of us have been reading it avidly, but he doesn’t know that.  In his latest message he asks that we email him – strangely the higher he climbs the greater the possibility that our emails will reach him.   This is as close as most of us will get to taking part in an Everest expedition so why not click on this link, check out his email address and send him a message of support from Scothern.

More council news

On the same night as the annual parish meeting we will be electing a new chairman (just before the parish meeting) and hopefully co-opting three new councillors (just after the parish meeting).   If this comes off we will finally have a full complement of councillors after quite a long period of carrying vacancies,  so hopefully the council will be refreshed and ready to carry out the will of the residents – always provided they can find out what that is!

See you at the parish meeting?
