22nd March 2011

Money saving tip for letter writers                                                               22nd March 2011

For those of us who still write letters now is a good time to go out and stock up on stamps.  On 4th April the cost of a first class stamp goes up five pence to 46p, whilst a second class stamp goes up four pence to 36p. The Clarion’s financial team has been on the case and reports that this is a 12% rise so investing in postage stamps labelled 1st or 2nd looks like a good investment.

Your favourite pothole

This is your chance to give your favourite pothole a makeover.   Not a lot of people know this but Lincolnshire County Council have a criterion for mending potholes – if they are at least 40mm ((just over 1 ½ inches) in depth and 500mm (just over 19 ½ inches)  across then they try and fix them straight away – i.e. within 24 hours!    So if you know of a pothole in Scothern which you think qualifies and you have been wondering why someone doesn’t do something about it then please measure it and send the details (i.e. location and measurement) to scothernpc@yahoo.co.uk and we will use Clarion power to try and get it fixed forthwith.

More royal news

Following our recent exclusive on the Royal Wedding – more royal news.   There will be “A Tribute to the King” at Scothern Village Hall at 8 p.m. on Saturday 2nd April.   Tickets are £10 each from local builder Dave Lusby tel 07850 980490.    All proceeds go to St Barnabas Hospice and haemophilia charities.

(OK, it’s not THE King, it’s not even Elvis, but it is in our own village hall and it is for a very good cause).

Litter picking

Not the most inspiring of invitations but why not come litter picking with other  villagers at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday 17th April starting at the Village Hall car park.   Councillor Judith Flatley is organising it and will provide fetching fluorescent jackets and some of those litter picky things that you see people on community service using.   And that’s what it will be – community service of the most thankless kind.   Look forward to seeing you there – if enough of us come along it won’t take long.

Gossip

We have quite a few talented and outstanding people in Scothern and one of them is former Red Arrows pilot Graham Duff.   Unusually for a Lincolnshire resident Graham is an experienced mountaineer and is well on his way to the climbers’ Holy Grail of conquering the highest mountain in each of the seven continents.   His next challenge is Everest which he is tackling in nine days time, along with a team led by David Hempleman-Adams, one of the world’s leading adventurers and explorers.   If you would like to see more of  Graham’s story click on  Everest expedition and see photographs of the team and other stuff.  If you’d like to sponsor Graham then go to Duffy's excellent adventure.

And finally

You don’t have to climb Mount Everest to have a heart attack – you could even have one in Scothern.  In fact you are statistically more likely to have one in Scothern.  So did you know there is a Scothern resident standing by with a defibrillator just in case you do?  You didn’t?  Well more about that in the next Scothern Clarion.
