The Scothern Clarion – Thursday 10th February 2011

Scothern man killed by horse – help wanted

OK, he was killed almost one hundred years ago, but a relative still needs any information you might have.   It’s a good story and if you want to read more just follow this link to Scothern’s website - http://www.scothern.org.uk/

Unofficial notes (and editor’s comments) from the Council meeting of 5th February 2011

Police Report – Constable Donnah Thompson reported that there had been a theft of lead from the roof of Ellison Boulters School during the few days prior to 28/1/11.  Stop press – more lead was stolen last Friday.  They must have used a vehicle – please keep your eyes peeled.

Parking outside Ellison Boulters is still a problem and the police are paying attention – but if you see a vehicle parked nearby out of hours maybe they are stealing lead!

Donnah says that in spite of the above Scothern remains one the villages with the lowest number of incidents for the Nettleham Neighbourhood  Police Team.

Highways/Ditches and Hedges
The large pothole at the Nettleham Road exit from the village has been repaired.

Finance
Councillor Jenny Walkley reported that we are still on track for a small (1%) decrease in next year’s precept.

Village matters in General
District Councillor Stuart Curtis advised that the new localism bill was expected to become law this summer.  The Bill is expected to give a good deal more power to local communities to shape their future, especially in respect of planning.   This means that it is more important than ever that people who have an interest in shaping Scothern’s future put themselves forward as potential  councillors – elections are to be held on 5th May 2010. Please contact the clerk to the council or any councillor if you would like to know more.

Appointment of new councillor

Mr Ian Reid of School Crescent was co-opted to the Council.   Ian was brought up in Scothern and now lives in the Old School where he received his early years education. He is a senior executive with Barclays Bank.

Allotments There is still a demand for allotments in the village but Councillors have so far failed to find any land which can be used for the purpose.   Grange Park (owned by the village) was identified as a place where there is perhaps space for a trial of one or two allotments, but the desirability and viability of this was not clear.  Further investigations are to be made.   Anyone with any views or ideas  on this subject is invited to contact the clerk as it is the council’s wish to fulfil this need if at all possible.

Grange Park  Councillor Walker referred to a report on Grange Park which revealed that no grant was available for remedial work.   The Council is still exploring the cost of clearing overgrowth and removal of stray bushes.  It was noted that the cost of simply keeping the grass under control currently stands at about £1,500 per year.

Village early warning system this winter’s bad weather has highlighted the difficulty of contacting residents with news of grit supplies, refuse collections, mutual help schemes and the like.   As a result it is the Council’s intention to offer to maintain a list of email addresses of any residents who would like to be kept informed of urgent/interesting village matters.   We are at present exploring the best way of doing this but if you would like to take part in early trials please email the clerk (scothernpc@yahoo.co.uk) with your name, address and we will get the scheme started.  (NB The Scothern Clarion is the response to this issue)
