Council lockout!

Did you come along to the meeting of the Scothern Parish Council last Wednesday and find the school locked up and empty?  Sorry, but so did the councillors!  However, undaunted they, along with seven members of the public, repaired to
School Crescent
and had the meeting at Apple Tree Cottage.   It seemed to suit Chairman Ian Reid, who lay like some Roman Emperor on a chaise-longue with his broken leg raised high.   Needless to say no-one fed him grapes.

The meeting itself was something of a success.  Largely informed by residents’ views at the annual parish meeting the council said –

Allotments – councillors will definitely come up with proposals to begin to fulfil the demand for allotments.

The broken fencing outside the Bottle and Glass – the Council has already made representations to the County Council which has agreed to repair the fencing with white boarding which residents prefer, rather than the utilitarian metal tubing which residents did not like.  They will also review the boarding at the corner of Elmdene and
Craypool Lane
.

Rough ground encroaching on gardens in Grange Park – the Council agreed to clear this ground (which has been allowed to become overgrown) as soon as possible.

Broadband – this is the most difficult one, but resident David Mason is actively pursuing the issue with several companies and we are by no means exhausted on this.  Many thanks to David.

We also had two offers of sponsorship to improve the appearance of the planters at the entrances to the village.

Best Kept Garden Competition

Councillor Catherine Roberts was away on a half term break, but reported back that the Best Kept Garden Competition is well on the way to starting.  The judges have been selected and hundreds of pounds in prizes have been offered by local businesses.   Many thanks to:

Graham Hill Painter & Decorator
D Lusby Builders
Stuart Worsnop building surveyor
Scothern Kennels & Cattery
Heath Farm Day Nursery
Steven Bullivant Auto Electrician
Therapeutic Touch Massage/Beauty

Carl Wilkinson

In previous years judging has been confined to gardens which can be seen from the street.   This year the judges have agreed to look in rear or hidden gardens if the occupiers would like to take part in this way.  If you feel your back garden is a hidden beauty, or maybe just very well kept, and you would like to have a go for one of the very valuable prizes then please email The Clarion on scothernpc@yahoo.co.uk and the judges will be in touch.

Village appearance

The support for improving the appearance of the village was very evident at the annual parish meeting and the council supports this initiative.  Councillor Catherine Roberts will be our lead person and she will very soon be in contact with local residents who wish to be involved.   It is planned to do a survey of the village in the next two or three weeks to see what is needed and then plan and carry out a course of action.

Where necessary the council will supply necessary materials (e.g. paint/paintbrushes) and any logistical support, and also try to make sure we don’t paint anything we are not supposed to!  As soon as we know what we are doing there will be a quick special Clarion calling for volunteers.   Physical help or ideas for what needs doing are both welcome.   Maybe we should organise something in our own street or Close?  Just clearing the weeds from footpaths will make a huge difference.

We have postponed the group litter picking which was to be tomorrow – but if the village looks quite litter free at least part of the reason is thanks to one local resident who does this in his own time, unorganised and unrecognised - until now.  Sorry John Fotheringham but the Clarion has to name you in order to say – Respect!

Goodbye Judith

Sadly we had to say goodbye to former Councillor Judith Flatley who has had to give up council work for the time being due to increased work commitments.  Many of you will remember the very successful history day she organised last year, and she has been involved in  numerous council initiatives for the benefit of the community.   She held on until we had another willing volunteer (which we now have) so thank you Judith for all you have done.

It isn’t all about Scothern

There are some things we don’t do in Scothern.  For instance, if you happen to have a classic car and are wondering where to show it off have you considered Langworth?   They are having a classic car show on Sunday 14th August at the Memorial Hall and if you feel like entering ring James Colley on 01522751576 or email lrflincoln@hotmail.co.uk .

Not Scothern PC, Scothern CC

One of the good things about living in Scothern is Scothern Cricket Club.  If you have read the Cricket Club report you will know how much they are doing for the young people of the village.

But never mind doing good for young people.  On a warm summer’s day what could be nicer than strolling down to the cricket ground, sitting on your deckchair and maybe having a cooling orange squash whilst you watch village cricket.  The Clarion has just spent a while watching today’s first team match against mighty Broughton.   The score as we left was Scothern 152 all out, Broughton 13 for 2.   We have every chance of taking the game, but it is still early days as the Clarion goes to press before the game is due to end. What is undisputable is that the first team is so far undefeated in six matches this season and are deservedly at the top of the table.

The Sunday team are not doing quite so well, but some say they have more fun!  They are at home to Caythorpe tomorrow starting at 2 p.m., so why not walk down and have a look at them for half an hour.  It’s such a lovely English thing to do – and we can do it knowing we are showing  support for an important Scothern organisation.   And, of course, it’s free!
